Measuring Trading Success

When we look at the things that make people successful, we see many of the same core traits, such as hard work, discipline, motivation, passion, and determination. But the one thing all of these things have in common is that they all display consistency. Consistency with all of these things is what takes someone over the top from being an average b/e trader to being a good trader, to being a great trader. But what prevents these things from working well is inconsistency. Inconsistency is the killer of success because success is built on the foundation of making great choices all of the time. You can’t have every time something is inconvenient, or you don’t feel like doing something that you aren’t going to do it. One of the most obvious examples is when a trader experiences 2, 3, 4, or more losses in a row, then start looking to change stuff thinking that what the once trusted doesn’t work.

Your Mind Must Be Stronger

Your mind must be stronger than your feelings. You must control your actions and decisions based on rational thought and logic, even when your emotions are trying to influence you in a different direction; essentially, prioritizing your conscious decision-making over impulsive reactions driven by feelings. In other words, your feelings keep you from sticking to your trading plan and staying in bad trades while your mind keeps you in check and following your trade plan.

Conquer Your Mind And Trading Success Will Follow

Your Trading Will Continue To Suffer If You Have Emotional Reactions To Your Trades. At different points in my trading career this quote was my reality. Once I learned to have rationale reactions to my trading and not make it personal - everything changed. Now, I still get emotional at times, but I am able to recognize when I do and can respond rationally. Every trader must develop that skill if they are to be successful. You can’t mask emotions. It takes valuable energy to try and combat emotions. All we need to do is have rational responses to our emotions and we’ll be just fine. The bottom line is that you must conquer your mind before you can conquer anything else. Conquer your mind, and success will follow. Every goal, every dream, every challenge, it all starts with what’s happening in your head. If you let your emotions, doubt, fear, or distractions take over, you’ll lose the battle before it begins. Your mind is your greatest weapon. Master your thoughts, silence the negativity, and focus on your vision. Because the moment you conquer your mind, you will become unstoppable.

Your Trading Must Be Forged In Fire

You Don’t Grow When Trading Is Perfect. You Grow When Trading Breaks You. You don’t grow when everything in your trading is easy. You grow when it knocks you down. It’s not on the peaks, it’s in the valleys, it’s in the fire that we are forged. It’s in the struggles that we find our true strength and direction. Even when you lose, you're STILL winning. You see, we need to be able to bend, not break, and be able to return to center so we can get back to work. If you have ever watched the TV SHOW Forged in Fire, the contestants have the challenge of hardening their blade perfectly. There is a fine line between it being too hard to where it’s brittle and breaks easily and being too soft to where it bends and is unable to recover back to center. As traders we have the same challenge. If you’re not made for the life of a trader, you’ll never be a trader. You must be made for this. Now it doesn’t mean you can’t make yourself for it. And what makes you for this is your mindset. If you are not mentally prepared to be a trader, it’s just not going to happen. I see too many people out here selling hope. Selling the dream. The people that follow them never stay in the fire long enough because it’s not comfortable. They come out weak and once they bend, they are done. They must start the process all over again. The only way to fix that bend is to get back in that trench and stay in the fire longer. There are a lot of people out there saying if you study hard enough, if you put in the time and effort, if you follow the best traders, you will make it. I’m not in that group. I learned a long time ago that is bullshit. You must be forged in fire. Your mind must be perfectly tempered so that it can bend, buy not break and be hardened just right so that you can be tested and not shatter into a million pieces. You must be forged in fire!
